As we celebrate Veterans Day, it is worth some time to not only THANK OUR VETS, but to think about why so many have been so willing to sacrifice so much for what the radical/progressive Left considers to be a country that deserves to be damned ( Obama’s minister, Jeremiah Wright) not loved. It is an interesting question because their hatred is real and tends to be centered on an interpretation of American history that focuses solely on our warts (some of which still do exist to a far less degree if one looks carefully!) to the detriment of not only what we have done to reform our own institutions, but what we have sacrificed in terms of saving humanity from some of the worst evils as found during WWII and the Cold War.
Let’s look at how two of the most important “warts”, slavery and fulfilling the open-ended declarations of the Founding Documents were handled. This review will show that the “warts” have been handled in a way that deserves praise not derision, YET WE SELDOM HEAR OF THIS SIDE OF OUR HISTORY FROM THE BRAINWASHED AOC’S OF THE LEFT!
>IN 1688, AT THE GERMANTOWN MEETING IN PENNSYLVANIA, QUAKERS DECLARED THAT SLAVERY WAS INCOMPATIBLE WITH GOD’S LAW AND BEING A QUAKER AND THEY SET IN MOTION THE FIRST ATTEMPT IN AMERICA TO END SLAVERY. BY 1754, SLAVERY ENDED FOR ALL THOSE WHO PROFESSED TO BE QUAKERS.
>THE FOUNDING DOCUMENTS WERE FREE OF RACIAL AND GENDER RESTRICTIONS—IT IS FACTS LIKE THAT WHICH ENABLED AMERICA TO ACTUALLY REFORM ITSELF TO BE ABLE TO LIVE UP TO “WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF EVIDENT….”
> IN 1777, THE VERMONT CONSTITUTION BANNED ADULT SLAVERY.BY 1789 FIVE MORE NORTHERN STATES HAD ALSO BANNED SLAVERY.
>THE SLAVE TRADE (IF NOT SLAVERY) WAS BANNED BY THE CONSTITUTION AFTER 1807.
>THE NORTHWEST ORDINANCE OF 1787 BANNED SLAVERY BUT ALLOWED PEOPLE TO VOTE ON IT ONCE STATEHOOD WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE NEW TERRITORIES.
>650,000 (MAYBE AS HIGH AS 850,000) AMERICANS, MAINLY WHITE, DIED TO END SLAVERY. THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR WAS FOLLOWED BY AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION THAT PERMANENTLY ENDED SLAVERY AND ATTEMPTED TO PROTECT THE NEWLY FREED SLAVES.
>DURING THE 1930’S AND 40’S THE SUPREME COURT RULED AGAINST SEGREGATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION BEGINNING WITH THE GAINES CASE IN 1935 LEADING TO BROWN VS BOARD OF EDUCATION IN 1954 WHICH ENDED SEGREGATION IN ALL SCHOOLS
>THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 AND THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965 WERE LANDMARK PIECES OF REFORM LEGISLATION THAT SET IN MOTION A MOSTLY PEACEFUL POLITICAL AND SOCIAL REVOLUTION THAT WE ARE STILL LIVING THROUGH TODAY.
>ELEMENTS OF THAT REVOLUTION ARE SEEN POLITICALLY THROUGH THE ELECTION OF THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENTS, GEN COLIN POWELL AS THE FIRST CHAIR OF THE JOINT CHIEFS AND FIRST BLACK SECRETARY OF STATE, DR. CONDI RICE AS FIRST BLACK FEMALE AS NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER AND BLACK FEMALE SECRETARY OF STATE. THE LIST GOES ON IN ALL SECTORS OF GOVERNMENT AND AT ALL LEVELS IN THE FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT,
>THE SOCIAL REVOLUTION IS JUST AS PRONOUNCED:IN 1970 THERE WERE ABOUT 250,000 INTERRACIAL MARRIAGES—TODAY THE NUMBER IS OVER 5 MILLION. YET MICHELLE OBAMA HAS THE AUDACITY TO CLAIM RECENTLY THAT WHITES ARE STILL RUNNING AWAY FROM BLACKS. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT THERE IS INSUFFICIENT TOLERATION AMONG THE RACES, THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE CIVIL RIGHTS INDUSTRY (SHARPTON AND GANG) HAS A VESTED INTEREST IN KEEPING RACIAL TENSIONS ALIVE FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES—THUS WE WERE PUT THROUGH THE OBAMA LIE OF “FERGUSON” AND “HANDS UP DON’T SHOOT”. YET, WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY WE SEE THE GROWTH OF A REJECTION OF THE OLD AND AN EMBRACING OF AN INDEPENDENT LINE OF POLITICAL THOUGHT AMONG A VARIETY OF SUCCESSFUL BLACKS THAT ARE ON TV AND RADIO AND BLACK INTELLECTUALS WHO ARE CHALLENGING THE ORTHODOX POLITICS OF THE PAST WHERE BLACKS AUTOMATICALLY VOTE DEMOCRAT! K CARL SMITH, WHO WE HAVE HEARD FOR MANY YEARS ABOUT FREDERICK DOUGLAS REPUBLICANS HAS HAD A MESSAGE THAT SAYS TO BLACK VOTERS: “IF YOU VOTE YOUR CHURCH VALUES HOW CAN YOU VOTE DEMOCRAT?”
So, in conclusion, this short outlining of the tremendous strides we have made as a nation in the area of one of our worst “warts” shows a great deal of progress and it answers why OUR VETERANS HAVE ALWAYS ANSWERED THE CALL TO DUTY and are willing to lay their lives on the line every day to defend the idea and ideals of America. They realize that what we have is worth defending even if many on the Left have a different view. In my view they are wrong, but we will defend their right to be wrong.
